A vision of students today - Michael Wesch - KSU

A Vision of Students Today
by Michael Wesch
October 12th 2007

This short video summarizes some of the most important characteristics of students today - how they learn, what they need to learn, their goals, hopes, dreams, what their lives will be like, and what kinds of changes they will experience in their lifetime. Created by Michael Wesch in collaboration with 200 students at Kansas State University.

This video demonstrates an interesting anecdotal survey of the undergraduate college student today. From the students’ testimonials, technology doesn’t seem to have improved the quality of their education, but rather created more distractions from it. For example, there was a student who mentions face booking through class. Who’s failing who? Is the teacher failing to teach the student, or is the student failing to learn from the teacher?

This video is an excellent demonstration of teacher expectations versus student reality. I found it interesting that a student might read only 8 books a year, but 1281 face book profiles. Is this where we want our society heading? Has being social replaced being educated?
